Nested Virtualization

Install a Server
Inside a Server.

Create a new VMware ESXi virtually inside your physical server. Offer your customers a "Virtual Physical Server" experience or create training environments.

Critical Configuration

Network Settings and Security Permissions

For the virtual machines inside the nested server to access the internet, you must definitely enable the following security settings on the network card of your physical server (Main Host).

vSwitch / Port Group Settings
Promiscuous mode Accept
MAC address changes Accept
Forged transmits Accept

If these settings are not made, Nested ESXi will run but the VMs inside will not receive IP and cannot access the internet.

1

Open Adapter Settings

Go to the Networking tab on your main ESXi server. Enter the settings of the vSwitch or Port Group to which the nested server is connected.

2

Go to Security Tab

Expand the "Security" tab in the settings window.

3

Set Permissions to "Accept"

Change the Promiscuous mode and Forged transmits options from "Reject" to "Accept" and save.

Required Operating System Template

For the Nested installation to be completed smoothly, you must use the special ESXi template optimized by DiyoVM.

VMware ESXi Nested Template

Current Version • .iso / .ova
Go to Template Repo

Simply download the template from this address and upload it to the "ISO/Template Management" section in your DiyoVM panel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there any performance loss in Nested Server?
Since hardware virtualization (VT-x/AMD-V) is passed from the physical server to the inside, performance loss is minimal (around 3-5%).
How are IP addresses defined?
IP addresses you assign from the DiyoVM panel (by Mac matching) can be used by VMs inside the nested server.
