What are SLA and "The Nines"?
SLA (Service Level Agreement) is the uptime guarantee provided by a service provider. In IT, these are often referred to as "Nines". "Five Nines" (99.999%) means the system can only be down for about 5 minutes per year, which is the military/financial standard.
What does 99.9% Uptime mean?
The hosting industry standard is 99.9%. This means your server or website can be down for a maximum of **43 minutes** in a month (including maintenance) before the SLA is breached.
Is maintenance included?
This depends entirely on your contract. Usually, "Scheduled Maintenance" is excluded from SLA calculations. However, in "High Availability" (HA) systems, downtime is unacceptable even for maintenance.
